Jeff's Journey will be a place where family and friends can come to get updates on our dad's condition and progress. We have a long road ahead of us and we hope that this blog can serve not only as a place for updates but also as a journal of strength and remembrance. We have faith in our Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ and we know that through our faith and perseverance our dad will be healed. Though we have been told that the chances are slim (1 in 200,000) that our dad will walk again, we will be by his side to help him beat those odds. Our dad will make it through this challenging trial and we will be there to help him every step of the way! We love you DAD & GRANDPA!!

Day 54 - Friday, October 16, 2015

Last night Jeff didn't sleep well at all. He couldn't turn his brain off and by morning he had a long list of things he wanted to get done. Good news is that with some help he was able to write his list out and then complete it throughout the day.

Jeff reports that therapy went really well. He used some demo wheels just like the ones he ordered for his wheelchair called "Extender Power Wheels." He really liked them.

Peggy stayed with Jeff for the entire day, just like every Friday. We are so grateful to her for the time and energy she puts into helping our dad. She is the perfect example of a dedicated mother who loves her family. Jay also came and had lunch with them. Time cannot dim a parent's love, that's for sure.

During the afternoon session of therapy Jeff learned how to shave himself! They put a device on his hand that the Clippers attached to with velcro. Tomorrow he will learn how to brush his own teeth with an electric toothbrush.

In order to discover which nerves still have connections they placed a shock device on Jeff's arms. What they learned is that there is still no change. The bottom parts that have been dead since the accident are still dead.

Jeff's friends Mike and Ira came to visit tonight and stayed for quite a while. Jeff enjoyed their discussions.

Jeff says that Wednesday has been the best day he's had since the accident because he felt so good. Today he's really struggling with the numbness and tingling nerve pain, especially in his arms. He says, "It's weird because every single day is different."

Yet he still works hard to learn new skills like shaving. He practices the different techniques used to perform every day tasks. He works on strengthening. He doesn't let the down days hold him back from progressing. He works through the pain, disappointment, and frustration.

His example teaches us that no excuse is good enough to stop trying and working toward the goals we set for ourselves. If being paralyzed isn't a good enough reason to give up, then whatever excuses we are making to ourselves are most definitely inadequate.

As he learns each new skill he teaches us perseverance and patience. He teaches us faith and long suffering. He teaches us to never give up and endure to the end. His example is invaluable as we struggle through our own trials in this life and we are eternally grateful for his strength and testimony during this difficult time.
